to each other, debating each other, and governor romney i know will do a great job on wednesday night laying out his vision for america's future and making the contrast between he and the president of the united states. >> as you well know, governor romney has been heavily criticized from his own side, conservative critics, and the chorus has been pretty striking. the latest that got a lot of attention, charles crowdheimer in "the washington post." this was the headline. go large, mitt. and the argument was he was not creating a large contrast, talking in detail about what his presidency would mean. >> i think he just has to lay out his plan and his vision. and i like charles and the other folks who are laying out critical columns right now. but the fact of the matter is, in the end this is about governor romney over the next four or five weeks laying that vision out for folks. you know, folks like us obsess about this stuff, david. but the general public that i speak to in new jersey and elsewhere are just beginning to really tune in to this race. so they're going to start tuning in

'll be on the road through wednesday's presidential debate. >>> mitt romney is keeping a low profile this weekend. he went to church outside boston. he had no public events yesterday or today. he heads to colorado tomorrow where he'll hold a rally and continue his preparations for wednesday's showdown debate in denver. >>> meantime republican party officials cut ties with the consulting firm that florida election officials say turned in suspicious voter application forms. cnn's david mattingly has been investigating. what have you learned? >> this is florida. it's always close there. hugely important to both sides. we know it's going to be close this time. any time the topic of voter registration fraud comes up, it's going to get a lot of attention. strategic allied consulting was hired to register people to vote. that sounds pretty denine, like it wouldn't be a big problem. here is what happened. that company was fired last week by the republican national committee after one of the employees of that company, just one, may have provided false signatures on some of the documents that he was filling ou

, a lot of republicans are talking of the upcoming debates and romney's best chance to turn things around. this is newt gingrich. >> i think it depends almost entirely on mitt personally. i debated him and most of them i did pretty well. the last two down to life and death and we were in florida and he was in danger of losing the nomination, he came in fired up decisive prepared, aggressive, energetic and to be honest i think he beat me both times. if he would be as direct as assertive, as firm with barack obama as he was with me in florida he'll win the debate going away and within three days the polls will change dramatically because he'll ha the case we cannot afford four more years of barack obama. >> so that first debate is next wednesday in denver and did you know that early voting has for the first time today voting in a swing state, iowa. guess who's there john king. iowa city, iowa. john, are you seeing many early voters where you are? >> reporter: we have seen quite a few of them brooke. we had a camera here in iowa city and des moines earlier today. i

on the eve of the debate. >> if i worked for mitt romney i would instruct him to bring it up. >> you would. >> bring it up to knock it down. to disavow it. in other words, romney, he had a really wonderful opportunity, remember when rush limbaugh said those hateful things about sandra fluke, that georgetown law student, he had a great opportunity to smack down the fanatical fringe. he didn't do it. it was a missed opportunity. doesn't mean romney agrees with the crazy things limbaugh said but he missed an opportunity to assert himself against the fringe and this is an opportunity for romney, if he's got any sense and he's a terribly bright guy, a very decent guy, but he's a bit of a coward where the right wing is concerned. i do hope, it would help romney, but he should stand up in that debate and raise it himself and disavow attacks from five years ago on the president that seem to me to be driven perhaps by race rather than economics. >> we'll see if more does come out in the next half hour or so. again, we'll continue it. gloria borger, paul begala, boyce watkins, eric erickson, thank y

[applause] >> hello, everybody, thank you. great group of folks we have here and welcome to huckabee from the fox news studios in new york city. all right, last week on this show, i told you that your government had lied to you about the attacks in egypt and libya when they claimed they were just acts of a spontaneous mob in reaction it a youtube video. i said then and i repeat now, i normally would not have used such strong language and made such a bold declaration, but the continuing revelations confirmed that my statement was not an exaggeration. our government had lied to us, and they did it knowingly. our ambassador to libya is

in governor romney's favor. >> almost 6 out of 10 americans think that obama will take this debate, romney goes in as under dog with low expectations, if he does well, he will exceed those expectations. i think he has a good chance of winning this debate. lou: what about, you made it clear, you are not overly impressed with the mr. obama's capabilities, he is no bill clinton in that regard. hollywood will be prompter-free. >> we've seen obama say there are 57 states in the union, then he goes, some kind of -- takes over his face, and it looks like he is caught in the lights like a deer. when he does not hit the ball in the sweet spot, he starts to crumble a little bit. because, the facade is so important to him. lou: you think that --- who is more gaffe prone? who has do you think the greater likelihood of committing, well significant mistake. >> i am sure romney does not offer $10,000 bet. lou: i remember governor perry's face. >> obama will have to think how many books do i have to sell to make $10,000. lou: did you see the pictures, sitting with a big wad of cash in his hand, president

of likely voters think that president will win this first debate, and 41% think that romney will win. joining me now, ed klein, author of "new york times" best seller "the amateur." great to see you, this is cute, the downplay, one of these, i can't think of another moment of modesty on the part of this president other than this example of trying to manage expectations. >> the golden-floated orator is bumbling,. lou: the idea he is such a heavy favorite to win the debate, that has to work in governor romney's favor. >> almost 6 out of 10 americans think that obama will take this debate, romney goes in as under dog with low expectations, if he does well, he will exceed those expectations. i think he has a good chance of winning this debate. lou: what about, you made it clear, you are not overly impressed with the mr. obama's capabilities, he is no bill clinton in that regard. hollywood will be prompter-free. >> we've seen obama say there are 57 states in the union, then he goes, some kind of -- takes over his face, and it looks like he is caught in the lights like a deer. when he does

leap, debate opponents in a single bound. >> we know that governor romney's been practicing for months. i think the invasion of normandy took less preparation than he's putting into these debates. >> he's articulate, smart. he did a great job in 2008 during that campaign as a debater. he had some tough debates with hillary clinton and he performed well. >> well, that was rob portman, of course, who has been prepping governor romney. before that, senior obama campaign advisor david axelrod. each has been working as though the entire campaign depends on what happens in next week's debate. the question is will it? we will talk about that in a moment. first, one indisputable truth, debates can make history. >> i have been -- >> september 26, 1960. the first televised presidential debate, signaling a new era where appearances matter more than ever and gaffes, however small, are magnified. >> the goals are the same for all americans. >> john f. kennedy, a young senator from massachusetts, facing off against vice president richard nixon, who is known to be a fierce debater. but on screen, ken

the debate and of course, the election. both president obama and governor romney are seasoned debaters, and experts say neither are prone to making major gaffes. but if there is one thing that history has taught us, when it comes to presidential debates, expect the unexpected. joining us now to talk about the moments and debate magic yet to come, republican consultant romney 2008 campaign advisor, alex castellanos and donna brazile. a lot of folks are saying these debates are do or die for romney. donna, do you agree? >> absolutely. first impression is very, very important. mitt romney had several opportunities to change the trajectory of the campaign, his selection of a running mate, paul ryan, got a small bounce. the convention speech didn't get any bounce, and now the first debate. this is like the first night on broadway. there will be more voters tuning in, they will be looking at his performance and if he comes across as somebody who is credible, who is up to the task, he might get another bounce out of it. >> aren't undecided voters the least likely to tune into the debates? gal

>> eric: the first presidential debate coming up in 72 hours -- obama, romney, fox, we'll be on it. >> jamie: it's the place to be. have a great day. shannon bream takes it away. >> stagnation versus growth, dependency versus opportunity and upward mobility. that's the classic choice, clear difference that we are offering. >> the three days until the first presidential debate. both candidates will be stepping off the campaign trail. get ready. it's a tight race in key battleground states and that has many republicans calling for romney go on offense, when he takes the stage on wednesday in denver. we begin america's news headquarters with carl cameron. we understand that romney is prepare for example wednesday's debate. any word on when we can expect. >> reporter: he's been preparing, arguably for seven years or more, but very, very aggressive in the last few months. he will go mind the doors and do additional rehearsing, talking with the staff about how to do this. the evolution has changed a little bit. he has been doing a lot of mock debates with ohio senator rob portman, thrs b

, the first debate between president obama and mitt romney just two days away now. it's happening in colorado. a key battleground state. inside a denver airplane hanger, gop volunteers worked the phones as crews set up the stage for mitt romney's last rally before his first presidential debate. >> people are waiting until the debate on wednesday. i think that's going to be a big sway for some people. just to finally see them kind of go head to head and see where they are on the issues. >> wednesday's debate at the university of denver focuses on domestic policy. romney supporters want the gop nominee to show undecided voters how he'll jump-start the slow economy. colorado is a battleground state that went for president obama back in 2008. a new washington post poll gives the president a comfortable 11-point lead in the swing states. the poll also shows 56% of voters think the fort president is going to win this first debate. sunday inlas vegas, he tried to dial back those expectations. >> governor romney, he's a good debater. i'm just okay. >> the president is staying in nevada until wednesda

is portraying the president in mitt romney's debates, as well. >>> president obama and mitt romney will go face to face wednesday in the first of three presidential debates. you can watch it live right here on cnn, 7:00 eastern. and also cnn.com. don't miss that. >>> we could all agree having children changes your life forever. as parents, we want what is best for our kids. we want to make sure our children are safe and happy. you would think that would be the case for every parent. not so. take a look at this man. this father was willing to strap on a vest filled with explosives and kill as many people as possible, including himself. this father wanted to desert his son, let him grow up without a dad. this father says it is perfectly okay if his 4-year-old son becomes a suicide bomber, too. cnn got this stunning exclusive interview with the father whose choices are so difficult to understa understand. >> reporter: behind these high walls of the prison, among the 7,000 inmates, are several men who say they're hellbent on being terrorists. we've come here to meet a confessed would-be suicide bom

sent 8 days getting ready for the debate. mitt romney is spending the next two days in colorado. the president is in nevada. he stopped by a campaign office before heading to his practice sessions with john kerry. there are three debates scheduled. >>> ktvu will air the debate wednesda it begins at 6:00 p.m. president obama and mitt romney will answer questions about domestic policy. ktvu channel 2 news will air after that debate. >>> yahoo's ceo has a big job tonight, she is a new mo marissa mayer delivered a ba boy last night. her tweeabouthe re't al the name marimaplto ta fe a's can clev theifi clinth , a closcall at a of th restaurant, what authorities say about the two people the car it t hbuil. vo: for years, sacramento politicians have chopped away funds for our schools. today, we're forty-seventh out of fifty in per-pupil funding. now these politicians say unless we send more tax dollars to sacramento, they'll cut education again. here's a new approach. prop thirty-eight sends billions in new education dollars straight to our local schools, and guarantees the politician

into the debates was 8 points down. so it's not a done deal. secondly the media loves to trumpet the mitt romney gaffes or mistakes or misstatement. of course, we haven't stopped hearing about the 47% remark. yet moment when obama says things like, you didn't build it if you built this business, you didn't build it, the media trumpets or takes on the white house talking points and claims that it was taken out of con detective by his critics. if you look at what he said it wasn't taken out of context at all. megyn: when you watch the clip it's clear he was making a joke. but a lot of people see those headlines and hear rachael maddow and walk away thinking the man is a moron. >> the real bias in the press is not that they sit around calculating how to hurt republicans. it's because they largely share the framework of liberal democrats. so their idea of what is news largely fits that of the white house. that leads to the second problem which is just sheer volume. when a republican commits a gaffe, and it seems only republicans are capable of gaffes according to the press today, it's picked up ever

that, of course, was with the great debate coach who then got let go by the romney camp. >> we'll see. i still think you don't want to be responding, you want to be laying out your views, and you want to be prosecuting the president. he needs to go in there with the mind of a tough-minded district attorney who's trying to prosecute the guy who he wants to be on trial, not defending himself. megyn: the two harvard law school graduates, romney also was a harvard mba, will square off and try to tell americans that they're very relatable. [laughter] we'll look forward to that. all right, chris, thank you. >> thank you. megyn: well, these debates, i mean, they're great theater for the american public, and they really do help a lot of americans decide whether it's just a visceral reaction or i like that guy better, they help americans decide. and a lot of the times it's the gaffes that turn people against the candidates. these campaigns, they're searching for the one defining moment, but of course they're also hoping it won't be an awkward one that sinks their campaign. recall 1992 when pre

that developed. >> the debate is built entirely around foreign policy. if romney doesn't take advantage of that platform to raise questions, again, poke holes in the president's arguments -- >> greta: why isn't he now? this is coming from the super pac. >> i think the romney campaign thinks it can wait that long, at least some people in the romney campaign, think it can wait, and want to do his foreign policy right before that debate, so there's some bringing together of these arguments. i think the time is now. you had governor romney asked about this last week on his plane. you know, how has the administration handled it? he said, look, it's too early to judge it. that's not the right answer. they've handled it incorrectly. basically everybody across the political spectrum thinks they've handled it incorrectly. i wouldn't leave it to the super pacs to do my work for me. this is exactly the type of ads that conservatives are looking for. >> it appears the romney campaign got brushed back because of the criticism. >> greta: you mean they got gun-shy? >> exactly. as the folks began to sh

like the debate. bill clinton told me that the debates are going to be crucial for romney. the first debate if he can turn around the 47% fiasco. it could be a disaster. the impression he gave that comes with being a wealthy detached guy not caring about people who need help. what would you recommend he do? >> i think the 47% comment revealed, he wasn't doing what you should do play to the center. he has written off peak who have the median income and below. the text book strategy is can you find a way. he is not taughting out ideology saying i can be a reasonable manager. that was his message at first sand he is trying to find different approaches which is what you do when you are losing and he should have stuck to the message he had all along instead of trying to pick paul ryan and we are going to have a discussion about the issues. >> marco rubio, you get a sense with paul ryan, that is not giving him a new air of voters coming in. they had barack obama. >> the book is fascinating. there are two categories. when weather forecasters and gamblers. they aren't giving you an exact ans

for the presidential debate. the first debate, of course is on wednesday. and in that memo romney adviser beth myers tells campaign surrogates there are several reasons that she believes the president will be likely to win the first debate, including this reason. here's a quote. this will be the eighth one-on-one presidential debate of his political career. for mitt romney, it will be his first. let's get right to congressman tim murphy, republican from pennsylvania. he's a romney campaign surrogate. nice to see you, sir. thank you for talking with us, appreciate it. >> good morning. good to be with you. >> thank you. i'm always very concerned on both sides in the campaign when they start saying really nice things about each other. everybody's been complimenting the other person's ability to do debates and highlighting the experience, and the -- the intrinsic ability they have. all of that, to me, goes to what this panel is, this memo is saying, excuse me. do you think that's true that mitt romney comes into this as the underdog? >> well, i think that whether the person -- if it's a personality cont

and mitt romney are about to come face to face in the first presidential debate. just four days away, both obama and romney are practicing this weekend while their campaigns are presenting each candidate as the underdog. paul is in the battleground state of new hampshire. >> hey, fred. as running mate paul ryan makes the rounds on the campaign trail both here in new hampshire and ohio, his boss mitt romney is hunkering down, getting ready for the debate on wednesday, the first presidential showdown between him and president barack obama. romney spending a lot of this weekend in debate preparation. the same thing for the president. he's off the campaign trail today, tomorrow he does go out to nevada, but he's spending a lot of this weekend, we believe, behind closed doors getting ready. meanwhile, both campaigns are playing the expectations game, trying to lower the bar for their candidates. even the candidates themselves are doing it. take a listen to mitt romney recently on the campaign trail. >> he's president of the united states, he's a very effective speaker. >> he's a very eloquent s
